The Four Dimensions of Mastery

When I set out to create my business, I needed a structure to use in my business for any of my clients, and for  myself – one that I could teach them and which they could continue to implement for years to come.

A methodology that decoded the challenges and provides a logical path forward.

This structure had to be robust, replicable and reliable.

This is why I use the Four Dimensions of Mastery – with all my clients – in executive, leadership, business & strategic coaching – both personally and  in professional capacities.

This methodology provides a simple framework for working out where the gaps are – where the challenges lie.

It provides us with clarity, criteria and consistency – which can be applied in any situation, anywhere, anytime.

By understanding the four dimensions of this model, you will learn what drives you, what’s most important to you, and what you want to focus on. From there, you will learn to develop your benchmarks of excellence, gold standards, best practice, structure and consistency. You can start to truly understand what success looks like, feels like, sounds like to you, and what you tell yourself about it.

Step 1. Your Why

Mindset

Your Thinking & Behaviour

Your Big Why. It’s what forms everything, including the decisions you make, what you’ll care about, what you’ll attend to and what you’ll agree to or reject.

It’s the environment that forms the context – the thinking – in which we operate.

Mission – what are you doing and for whom? Why? For what benefit?

Vision – what is your vision for your life? What direction is your life taking? What do you want your life to look like?

Purpose – what is our higher purpose? Why do we doing what we are doing?

Standards – what are the standards for you? What is not negotiable in your life? What are your routines & habits? Do you make excuses or follow through on your promises?

Values – what do you value most? Do you live in alignment with your values?

Goals & Outcomes – what are your goals? What do you want to achieve?

Attitudes – what is your attitude towards yourself? Towards others? Towards life?

Beliefs – what do you believe to be true about yourself and the world? What do you believe is possible? Or not possible?

Expectations – what do you expect of yourself and others?

Mindset – do you have a growth mindset or are you stuck where you are? How does your thinking affect your behaviour and is it in alignment with the rest of your why?

The more we expand our thinking and awareness, the more we can achieve the life we are striving for.

If we can’t think about it, we can’t create it, notice it, attend to it or care about it. Our thinking will determine and limit what we can achieve.

If our thinking is bound by our limiting beliefs  and judgements, then we will have a life bound by these factors.

If our thinking is expansive and possibility-focused, so will what we can achieve.

So, what’s stopping you?

Step 2. Your How

Performance

The pieces of the puzzle

In order to achieve your Big Why, you must understand how you are going to get there. How are you going to achieve your goals? How do you measure benchmarks of excellence and success? How will you know when you are there? How do you measure it? What evidence do you have to know you have achieve?

Planning and organisation – what planning do you need to do? What specifically? What else?

Important areas of your life – what resources are available to you? What is available to assist you achieve your goals and desired outcomes?

Your strategies – what are the specific steps and processes you take to achieve the goal? What has worked before? What doesn’t work?

Experiences you have – what are the different parts of each goal? What is available and not available to you now?

Step 3. Your What

– Action

The reality of what you are actually doing

What we actually do is a direct reflection of our Big Why. Our behaviour is always in alignment with our true selves.

Habits and Routines – what habits and routines are creating your current outcomes? What do you need to implement in order to achieve your goals?

Actions – is what you do each and every day in alignment with your Big Why? Are your actions a reflection of your values, mission, vision and standards?

Planned Action Steps – are you implementing the action steps easily, or is it clunky? Are these action steps a true reflection of your ideal best self?

What you actually do is a direct reflection of our Big Why. You behave in alignment with your true selves. Your action steps must be in alignment with your ideal best self.

If your behaviour is creating outcomes that you don’t want, then you must go back to Step 1 – your Big Why. Who are you really? Not who you want to be – but who are you now? Only once you understand this will you achieve the outcomes you want.

Step 4. Your Who

– Communication

Your relationship with yourself and others

How is your relationship with yourself and others?

How do you want it to be?

Feedback – how do you take feedback? How do you give feedback? What does feedback mean to you? 

Inner Circle – what relationships do you have in your life? Who is in your inner circle that you can always rely on no matter what?

Development – are you taking responsibility for your own development as a human?

Quality of Conversations & Discussions – what do you focus on? What is the quality of your conversations and discussions with others?

Mentoring & Guidance – do you serve and inspire others? Do you receive mentoring and guidance from others or do you go it alone? 

Your Turn

We will explore all these steps in more detail as we go through the course.

Take some time to reflect on the questions in the workbook. There may be some questions you’ve never thought about, or it may feel uncomfortable or exciting!
